What documentation will I need to bring with me on holiday?

It is your responsibility to bring the correct documentation when travelling including a valid passport and visa where required. You may not be permitted to board a flight if you are not in possession of the correct documentation.

What requirements should my passport fulfill?

You must be in possession of a FULL and VALID passport to visit the destinations we provide on this website. The passport must be valid 90 days from the date of departure. Please note that names and initials on your passport must match those on your flight tickets.

My children are still on my 10 year passport - is this still okay for them to travel?

From 1st October, 2004 all children, regardless of age, must obtain an individual Irish passport in their own name. However, parent's passports issued before 1st October 2004 on which children have been included remain valid and do not need to be replaced. Children, who are included on a parent's passport issued before 1 October, may continue to travel to most countries up to their 16th birthday along with that parent providing the passport is still valid.

If you are in any doubt, check with the Embassy or Consulate of the country concerned before you travel.

I need to get a new passport - how can I do this?

If you currently live outside Ireland, you should apply to the Irish embassy or consulate in the country in which you live.

If you live in Ireland, you can apply directly to the passport offices in Dublin or Cork or to the nearest post office that carries the ‘Service plus’ logo.

After 26th October 2004

What is the procedure for entry into the U.S.?

All airports in the United States of America have reviewed their security procedures. The US Immigration Department has updated its policy on passengers entering the United States current Visa Waiver Programme, of which the Republic of Ireland is a participant. This allows for travel to the United States for up to 90 days without a visa for tourist or business purposes.

What is a machine readable passport?

A machine-readable passport has the holder's personal details
  •  Name
  •  Date Of Birth
  •  Nationality
  •  Passport Number (lines of text at the base of the photo page)

All of this text must be clearly readable by a machine e.g.

LINE 1: P COUNTRY LAST NAME << FIRST NAME < MIDDLE NAME <<<<<

LINE 2: PASSPORT NUMBER COUNTRY DOB<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Are all passports machine-readable?

Not necessarily. The majority of passports issued by the Passport Offices in Dublin and Cork and the Irish Embassy in London, which represent over 90% of all passports in circulation, are machine-readable and holders of such passports are therefore not affected by the new U.S. requirements.

My child is on my passport. I was advised that this was valid for travel until my child reaches 16, or the passport expires but with the new US regulations do I need a new passport for my child?

Yes. You should obtain a new passport for your child. As machine readable passports typically have bio data for only one traveller in the machine readable zone, children will therefore require their own individual passports in order to travel visa free under the Visa Waiver Program. The alternative is to apply for a US visa for your child.
